The Real Cost of a Cheap Website for Your Business
The R999 website offer looks like a bargain. Here is what business owners typically discover six months later.

The ad is everywhere. "Professional website from R999." Sometimes it is R499. Sometimes it comes with a free domain and free hosting for a year. It sounds like exactly what a new business needs.
I am not here to tell you that cheap websites are always bad. Some are perfectly adequate for certain purposes. But I have had enough conversations with business owners who came to me after a cheap website failed them to know that the real cost is almost never the number on the invoice.
What You Get for R999
At that price point, you are getting a pre-built template dropped onto shared hosting, the cheapest possible hosting environment, no SEO setup, no performance optimisation, no custom design decisions and no ongoing relationship with whoever built it. The site exists. Whether it works for your business is a different question entirely.
The Hidden Costs That Hit Later
- Redesign 12 to 18 months later when you realise it is not generating any enquiries
- Lost leads you cannot measure because there was no analytics setup
- Reputation cost when a potential client visits your site and it looks untrustworthy
- Emergency fixes when the cheap hosting goes down or the template breaks after an update
- Migration costs when you eventually move to a proper setup and need content transferred
The Three Year Maths
A R999 website that gets redesigned after 18 months, with R300 per month hosting, one emergency fix at R2,000 and a rebuild at R8,000 has cost you R17,399 over three years. It has also cost you 18 months of underperformance that is harder to put a number on.
A R15,000 website on good hosting at R400 per month with proper SEO from day one and a developer relationship for small updates has cost you R29,400 over the same period and has likely been generating enquiries from month three. The gap narrows dramatically when you account for the leads the first option was not generating.

- Cross-platform mobile app (iOS and Android): R35,000 to R120,000

Red Flags in a Quote That Is Too Low
- No discovery call or questions about your business before quoting
- Template-only approach with no mention of customisation

- No maintenance plan or ongoing relationship offered
- Turnaround time of less than a week for a "complete website"
A website is not an expense. It is the only salesperson who works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without salary or commission. Treat it like an investment and build it properly from the start.
